University Pension Plan (UPP) is a jointly sponsored, defined benefit pension plan created by and for Ontario’s university sector. It was created with the vision of a strong sector-wide plan to enhance retirement security for faculty and staff at Ontario’s universities.
UPP currently serves over 40,000 working and retired members across four Ontario universities and 12 sector organizations and manages $11.7 billion in pension assets. Contributions to the Plan are funded equally by members and employers.

Laurier has been actively participating in the UPP efforts since they began in 2014 and closely following their progress. During early 2021, Laurier formed a multi-lateral working group comprised of representatives from various employee/union groups to further explore the UPP as a potential option for Laurier. The focus of the working group’s meetings was on building knowledge about the UPP plan design and governance structure, understanding how it compares to the Laurier Pension Plan, and what steps would be required if Laurier chooses to join the UPP in the future.
Laurier has negotiated and ratified agreements with all Unions representing current Laurier Plan Members (WLUFA, WLUSA/OSSTF, CUPE, UFCW, OPSEU and IATSE) for the Unions to provide consent on behalf of their represented plan members. Consent is required by at least 2/3 of active members and no more than 1/3 of retired and deferred members objecting to convert the WLU Pension Plan to the UPP. On August 23, 2024, notice packages were distributed to all plan members, including retirees and deferred members, to advise them of the proposed conversion to UPP.

Retiree Benefits
my Sun Life
Sun Life’s online system my Sun Life allows you to submit claims online, check the status of a claim, sign-up for direct deposit of claim payments and view details regarding your health, dental and vision plan coverage.
my Sun Life offers a rich source of information, including the “Find a Provider” feature, claim forms and your benefit booklet.

Laurier Email Access as a Retiree
Because the education sector is among the most impacted and targeted industry for malware and cyber-security attacks, ICT will create you a new email account separate from your legacy email account that will require you to be enrolled in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This process complies with Laurier Policy 9.1 and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
Upon retirement from Laurier, you will receive detailed instructions on how to login to your new email address with MFA, and how to transition any personal emails you wish to keep.
Legal Compliance with FIPPA
Retirees, by definition, are no longer “agents of the institution” and thus need to have restricted access. A new email account clearly delineates this next phase of your Laurier journey.
Register for MFA
MFA adds an extra layer of protection to help prevent hacking, even if your password has been compromised. Your password is something you know while your second layer is something you have (such as a mobile device or hardware token).

Extended Access Request
Some retiree faculty may be eligible for extended access:

- Access to Connect for research-related resources
- Links to Millennium, ChromeRiver, etc.

- Verify your sign-in by using the MFA method you registered for.

The Wilfrid Laurier University Retirees’ Association (WLURA) is open to all Laurier retirees.
